Polemi is the biggest village in the area with a population of about 850 and including 20 non-Cypriot families. It’s ideally situated between Paphos and Polis – Paphos being 22kms away and Polis 20kms. The village has three restaurants, three coffee shops, three supermarkets and a couple of kiosks. The school in Polemi serves the surrounding villages too with buses bringing the 11-16 year olds in daily. Polemi has many churches, the oldest being the church of Panagia Chryseleousa which was built in the 13/14th century and is now a protected building. The nearest police station is a short drive away in Stroumpi. There is no hospital in Polemi, the nearest one being in Polis, but a doctor does visit once a week on a Friday. In Polemi, you can while away the hours admiring the fantastic mountain views, or take in a round of golf in nearby Tsada or why not try to land a fish or too at the nearby Evretou Dam. If you’re more interested in the history of the village, visit the cultural centre which was built in the 1100s and has been renovated with many ancient artefacts. Maybe you’d like to take a drive and visit the Seat of Digenis at Kampos tis Rigenas. This is a piece of land that is said to resemble a human seat and is where Digenis sat while waiting to attack the Saracens who would loot and pillage the local houses. Polemi is a thriving village with a couple of banks, a butcher’s, a bakery, a flower shop and even a small winery. There is a bigger wine warehouse being built on the outskirts of Polemi and if you drive around, you can see why a bigger winery is needed. Everywhere you look there are vines. Polemi would be an ideal choice if you wanted to combine traditional village life with the convenience and variety of a small town. |
