After travelling north from Paphos for about 45 minutes you’ll arrive at the small town of Polis. This ancient town was built thousands of years ago and was known in Hellenistic and medieval times as Arsinoe and later it was called Mario. Re-christened again as Polis Chrysochous, the name in Greek means GoldenTown and this may stem from the gloriously sandy beach that you’ll find here. From this European Blue Flag beach, the coast stretches west to the Akamas peninsula (soon to become a National Park) and east to the village of Pyrgos, which is as far east as you can go before reaching the Turkish-occupied territory. Polis is the least developed beach resort in the Paphos area and offers easy access to the varied landscapes. Here you will find crystal clear waters set against a backdrop of rugged mountains and lush, green vegetation. If they’re not somehow linked with the tourism industry, the inhabitants' income is supplemented by agriculture and fishing. Talking of fishing, the picturesque fishing port of Latchi (Latsi) is about a five-minute drive away. Or you can walk from the campsite at Polis all the way along the beach to Latchi. It may take a while but with frequent stops along the way for swimming, you can end your journey with a fantastic fish supper watching the sun set over the Akamas or over the sea, depending on the time of year. If you prefer golf to fishing, then Tsada golf course is only a 25-minute drive away (pardon the pun). If you’re interested in nature, then the Akamas is the place for you. There are a number of nature trails here and you can take your pick from a one-hour stroll to a more ambitious five-hour hike. The choice is yours but don’t miss this opportunity to gaze on the panoramic view of Chrysochous Bay while you’re inspecting the many varied species of flowers, shrubs, trees and wildlife. For the photographers amongst you, the landscape throughout the Polis region will grant you many opportunities to capture nature at its grandest. And, of course, the sunsets are not to be missed. If you’re keen on history then you must visit the archaeological museum of Marion-Arsinoe in Polis. The museum has three exhibition spaces and in Room I the objects displayed were all found in the area around Polis. They are chronologically arranged to portray the historical development from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic (copper and stone) to the medieval periods. And if you stay in Polis long enough, you may even be able to watch modern-day archaeologists at work on sites in the centre of town, like the ongoing work near Polis hospital where a 6th century basilica has been unearthed. Another interesting museum is the Polis Culture Centre which has a stage area and seating for 400, as well as an exhibition area that can cater for up to 250 people. Near Polis town square is the Church of Agios Andronikos, steeped in Byzantine history with 15th and 16th century paintings adorning its walls. Nearby is the traditional 18th century church of Agia Kyriaki, a single nave church. Polis has many other superb examples of old architecture and as you walk around the town you’ll be impressed by the traditional buildings. Returning to modern-day Polis, with its restored stone buildings and pedestrian-friendly town square, you will find banks, supermarkets, opticians, DVD rental shops, bakeries, bars, restaurants, traditional taverns, etc. In fact Polis has everything you need to make your life comfortable, or exciting, or gastronomically-fulfilling. Whatever your lifestyle, Polis accommodates it with charm. Polis is the ideal location if you appreciate authenticity and seek rest and tranquillity in a pleasant and friendly environment. Polis combines mountains, sea and plain with a healthy climate, a mild winter, a warm, clear sea and sandy beaches. What more could you want? |
