Paphos Kidney Association

PAPHOS KIDNEY ASSOCIATION Registered Charity No. 4578

For the past 18 years our Association has supported all those who attend the Paphos General Hospital Renal Unit by raising funds for equipment. We also assist people from around the world with kidney problems who wish to visit Cyprus and are concerned about continuing their treatment whilst here. We work in co-operation with hospitals that provide dialysis and also offer dietary advice that has been compiled by nephrology dieticians and try to allay any concerns for patients who have to come to terms with a life-changing future. The prospect of dialysis is frightening to say the least. Any queries beyond our scope are referred to one of many medical staff with who we are in contact.

Kidney problems will not go away and with any luck neither shall we. Among the 80,000 people with kidney problems living in Cyprus, many die each year but we are trying to bring the problem to peoples’ attention, but it is very difficult unless they have a personal contact with a sufferer. Kidney disease can be avoided in a lot of cases, we are here to try and get that message across.

The government has agreed with us that there is an urgent need for a 40-bed renal unit and construction will commence in 3 years. An extension to the existing renal unit is to be built in the interim period to cope with the ever increasing numbers of patients requiring dialysis. Funds are desperately needed so that the extension can be fully equipped and able to function as soon as possible to help those awaiting treatment.
